Website under redevelopment Several years ago a large group of profoundly deaf and hard of hearing people became frustrated with the way the cinema world treated us. We wanted equal access to the cinema. We soon realised that the only way things would change was to take positive action ourselves. First we organised for a hearing interpreter to sign a film in British Sign Language with subtitles. This meant deaf people with their families had equal access to a hearing cinema world. We then realised that there was no reason why a deaf interpreter could not sign the film to other deaf people. We then made this happen. History was changed on the 8th of December 2001. With signed screening of “Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone”. The performance was a sell out. Deaf people in England now had equal access to the cinema world interpreted by a profoundly deaf person named Clive Mason. Clive Mason is highly respected in the deaf community, with many years of sign language experience. As a result of this we now have a good working relationship with the cinema and film distribution world. Which has taken patience on both sides. The administration between the cinemas, the distributors and ourselves is developing strongly. The strengthening of these ties will have a major ripple effect, enabling people to see deafness in a positive way.
